Why Read?

(for Mark & Marilyn)

By J.S. Porter

I used to say: Read because
you get to know your shadow,
you see the world multi-dimensionally,
you understand the Other…
But these are pastoral reasons,
sheep-in-the-meadow reasons.

There are bombs dropping.
There is a fool in the White House.
Planetary oblivion seems near.

Now I say: Read
to uncover bullshit, expose assholes,
disrobe Emperors.
Read because Bush doesn’t,
because his kind doesn’t want
you to read.

Read against the grain of death.
Read rebelliously, defiantly.
Read as if one good word, one good
sentence, one good book can change the world.
