Why Read?

By J.S. Porter (Revised)

Reading is dreaming with open eyes. Yoyo
for Alica Jackson

I used to say: Read because
you get to know your shadow,
you understand the Other,
you see the world multi-dimensionally.
But these are pastoral reasons,
sheep-in-the-meadow reasons.

A wounded rapacious feral cat prowls the White House

Now I say: Read
to uncover bullshit, expose con men,
disrobe emperors.
Read because Trump doesn't,
because his associates don't want you to.

Read against the lies, the disinformation.
Read rebelliously, defiantly,

as if the book in your hands ignites the revolution.
